Bois Blanc Island, commonly called Boblo Island, is an island in the Detroit River on the Canadian side of the border and is part of Amherstburg, Ontario. Bois Blanc means "White Woods," a name derived from the many birch and beech trees in the area. The Bois Blanc Island Lighthouse is a white circular tapered stone lighthouse built in 1836. The lighthouse is located on the southern tip of Bois Blanc Island at the juncture of the Detroit River and Lake Erie. Due to limited access from the mainland, most of the visitors to the site are recreational boaters visiting the nearby beach, where a trail leads to the lighthouse and nearby blockhouse.
